One of the products that immediately caught my eye in the new catalogue was this Sunburst Background Thin Cut.

I knew that it would be a perfect match for our specialty holographic paper, which has been sitting on my crafting shelf since I bought it. I was so excited to finally be inspired to use this paper! I love how it has just the right amount of gloss and shine, to truly mimic the sun when used with this thin cut.

I created the background for this card with Distress Oxide inks, which are perfect for achieving soft blended scenes, like a sunrise or sunset.

I could have stopped there, as the card made a statement with just the holographic thin cut and inked background, but I decided to add a sentiment in the middle of the sun. I used the Spot-On Sentiments stamp set, which is meant to coordinate with the Sunburst Background thin cut, and comes with a variety of sentiments.

I stamped the little circle in Chipped Sapphire distress oxide ink, then again in Versamark ink, in order to heat emboss it with clear embossing powder. A stamping platform is highly recommended for this step in order to ensure that the stamped images are perfectly aligned. You could also easily just stamp the image in regular ink and skip embossing.

The biggest challenge in this project was adhering the die cut to the background. Because the sun rays are so thin, there were some glue mishaps along the way 🤬 (⬅️ me in the craft room upon getting glue everywhere on the very last step of the project).

In my first attempt I used the Tombow Multi-bond Glue Pen (aka: the green bottle glue). It is white, and meant to dry clear – nevertheless, it still made a giant mess, and even when dried, was very obvious on the distress oxide background and the holographic paper. The second time around, I used the Tombow Dual-Tip Permanent glue pen (the blue bottle), which is clear to start. Though there are still a few spots on the final card where the glue is evident, it is much cleaner than the first try.

My patience wore out after that, so I can’t speak to how other adhesives would perform, but next time I may try Liquid Glass with the Fine Tip Applicator to see if that keeps the project cleaner overall.

I will still send this card to my best friend for her 35th birthday, because it’s homemade and imperfections are part of the charm. Plus, she loves watching the sun set from her balcony patio in Montreal, so I know she will appreciate it ☀️
